My practice is rooted in ancestral animist belief systems, specifically from South Asia and their influence on ecological knowledge and conservation. I work primarily through painting, which has recently incorporated embroidered elements and traditional textiles. Through various socially engaged practices, for example community-research-based residencies and community workshops, I have familiarised myself with rituals, folklore and myths which I use to construct speculative worlds populated with female protagonists with skin pigmented like Hindu Goddesses. They are depicted engaging in strange rituals, often exploring their environment through the sense of touch. Their sensorial exploration is primal and wordless, assuming animist qualities in their co-performers (the architecture or the flora). The foregrounded relationships are therefore reciprocal and through them, the women acquire the agency to create and structure the world around them.
